FAQ's

Do you have to live in Maine to register trailers in Maine?

No - out of state or non-resident individuals and businesses can register trailers here in Maine.

How can your company register our trailers in Maine?

Our company - Maine Trailer Registrations - is a statutory agent for the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles. We may need you to provide us with a signed Power of Attorney which can be downloaded here on our website.

When do I have to title a trailer in Maine?

If a trailer is 1995 or newer and/or it has an empty (not GVW) weight of more than 3,000 lbs. and you do not have it titled in another state.

If a trailer is older than 1995 or weighs less than 3,000 lbs. (not GVW), you do not have to title it in Maine. We just need your proof of ownership (Bill of Sale, current registration, etc.).

A blank Bill of Sale can be downloaded from our website, filled out and signed and mailed or faxed to us. see printable documents

What is a Power of Attorney needed for?

We need a signed Power of Attorney in order to act as your representative and title your trailer(s) here in Maine. You or your company will always be listed as the trailer's owner..

The only time a Power of Attorney form is required is when we are asking for your original title.

We provide blank Power of Attorney forms in two formats for our client's convenience - MS Word document and Adobe PDF. Both are identical. see printable documents

When Are Sales Taxes Due?

If you bought a trailer (new or used) for personal use that is not a large semi-trailer (GVW over 50,000 lbs.), 5% Maine Sales Tax is due on the amount paid for the trailer.

Examples: boat trailer, horse trailer, utility trailer, snowmobile trailer, etc.

If you bought a large semi-trailer, it is assumed that it will be used in Interstate Commerce and no sales tax is required.

No Sales Tax Due...
- if trailer is already titled in your name
- if trailer is already registered in your name
- if trailer is used in Interstate Commerce over 80% of the time
